We are going to start a new series of introducing you to the stories of the prophets peace be upon them in the holy Qur’an. The first story we are going to write is about the prophet Yusuf A.S.

the story of the prophet Yusuf A.S is one of the stories of the prophets mentioned in detail in the Holy Qur’an, Where Allah Almighty sent a complete surah in which it talks about the story of the Prophet Yusuf and his father Jacob – peace be upon them both – and his brothers. Life is full of challenges, and there isn’t a single human being on earth who’s free from hardship in one form or another.

So, there are a lot of life lessons in each story of the prophets to guide you and insist on the fact you are not the only one who is suffering and it’s not a permanent status even the prophets were tested with losses of wealth, health or their loved ones. So, they experienced all types of emotions faith, patience, resilience, self-awareness, and forgiveness.

Yusuf was the closest son to Jacob peace be upon him, this made his brother jealous which was the beginning of the story then. One day the prophet Yusuf came to his father Jacob and told him that he had seen the sun and the moon in his dream, just as he saw eleven stars prostrating to him; His father ordered him not to tell his brothers about this dream, because that would increase their hatred and jealousy of Yusuf.

The story begins with Yusuf’s (AS) dream, then it elaborates on the brothers’ envy and their throwing him into the well.

Brothers conspiracy

Throwing Yusuf into the well:

As we mentioned Yusuf’s stepbrothers because their father loved him the most. The hatred and jealousy of Yusuf’s brothers increased until they decided to get rid of him so their father could love them. Hence, they discussed that this is the best way to get rid of him. One of them suggested killing him.

Another one suggested throwing him into a deep well this might be better than killing him. They asked their father to allow Yusuf to play with them. Jacob said, “Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are unaware.” But their brothers insisted on taking extreme care of him.

So, they managed to persuade him and went out to throw him into the well. They removed Prophet Yusuf’s (AS) shirt and threw him into the well. Ignoring their young brother’s pleas, they heartlessly left him to die of hunger. They went back to their father weeping over what had happened to Yusuf. They brought his shirt stained with blood, claiming that he was eaten by a wolf, but Jacob – upon him be peace – did not believe them and told them:

“No! Your souls must have tempted you to do something ˹evil˺. So ˹I am left with nothing but˺ beautiful patience!1 I trust Allah will return them all to me. Surely He ˹alone˺ is the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

Surah yussuf: 83

The caravan rescuing Yusuf A.S

Some people rescued Yusuf A.S from the well, a group of travelers passed by; So, they threw their bucket into the well to drink, and when they took it out, Joseph – peace be upon him – came out to them, so the man who saw said: (Oh good news, this is a boy), they sold him into slavery. A rich man from Egypt bought him. He is called The Aziz (Governor of Egypt and Chief Officer of the King).

Allah almighty said in the holy Qur’an in Surah Yusuf verse 21:

The man from Egypt1 who bought him said to his wife, “Take good care of him, perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” This is how We established Joseph in the land, so that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah’s Will always prevails, but most people do not know.

Surah yussuf: 21

Al Aziz house

The temptation of Aziz’s wife:

Yusuf grew up in Aziz’s house and wife- peace be upon him. When he became a man, she tried to seduce him but he refused. She chased him and tore his shirt. Allah almighty said in surah Yusuf verse 25:

They raced for the door and she tore his shirt from the back, only to find her husband at the door. She cried, “What is the penalty for someone who tried to violate your wife, except imprisonment or a painful punishment?”

When her husband arrived, she tried to blame him. However, it was apparent that the shirt was torn from the back rather than the front. Which means she was the one who tried to reach him. The news of her actions of Joseph reached the women of the city, and gossip began between them about what she had done, and when she heard what was going on between them. she wanted to explain the reason for her actions.

So, she decided to prepare a meal of food and invited them to it, and when they come, she gave each of them a knife to use for eating, then she asked Yusuf – peace be upon him – to come out to them, and when he showed and they saw him, they did not believe their eyes of his beauty, and with their minds gone, they injured their hands with the knives. They did not believe that this was human but rather an angel.

Allah almighty said in surah Yusuf verse 31 :

When she heard about their gossip,1 she invited them and set a banquet for them. She gave each one a knife, then said ˹to Joseph˺, “Come out before them.” When they saw him, they were so stunned ˹by his beauty˺ that they cut their hands,2 and exclaimed, “Good God! This cannot be human; this must be a noble angel!”

when the prophet Yusuf peace be upon him saw that he said: “O my Lord! the prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me: Unless Thou turn away their snare from me, I should (in my youthful folly) feel inclined towards them and join the ranks of the ignorant.”

The prophet Yusuf in the prison

Al- Aziz decided to put Yusuf- peace be upon him- in prison despite their knowledge of his innocence, and they decided to put him in prison for a period of time with the intention of dropping the charge against the wife of Al- Aziz.

On the same day that Prophet Yusuf (AS) was put into prison, two other men were also imprisoned. One used to serve the king wine, while the other was the royal cook. Both men had been accused of trying to poison the king. On the following day, the wine server said to Prophet Yusuf (AS), “I saw in a dream that I was crushing grapes to make wine for the king”. The cook said, “I dreamt that I was carrying some bread in a basket on my head and birds were pecking at the bread”. Both men saw that Prophet Yusuf (AS) was a noble and pious person and asked him if he could interpret their dreams. Prophet Yusuf (AS) took this opportunity to preach the religion of Allah to his prison mates..

Finally, he said, “O my prison mates! The man who dreamt that he was crushing grapes will soon be released from here and will go back to his previous post. The second one, who carried the bread on his head in the dream, will be executed and the birds will start to eat his brain.” Prophet Yusuf (AS) thought of getting himself released from prison through the wine-server and told him to remind the king of his innocence when he saw him. Unfortunately, the wine server forgot all that Prophet Yusuf (AS) had told him to convey to the king.

Prophet Yusuf’s (AS) Release from Prison

The Holy Qur’an says:

The king dreamt that seven lean cows were eating seven fat ones and that there were seven green ears of corn and seven dry ones. He asked the nobles to tell him the meaning of his dream if they were able to. They replied, “It is a confusing dream and we do not know the meaning of such dreams.”

Surah Yusuf, 12:43,44

The king asked his entourage to bring him Yusuf – upon him be peace – after he explained his dream to him, but Yusuf – peace be upon him – refused until his innocence was shown to the people and they knew that he did not commit anything.
