Introduction:

What is a miracle?

Islam defines a miracle as an extraordinary act or event that is contrary to the laws of nature and can only come about through the direct intervention of Allah Almighty Himself. The Arabic word for miracle is “mu’jizah”.  It stems from the word (Ajz), meaning something that incapacitates, cannot be resisted, unique.  According to the Islam religion, miracles are carried out with the permission of Allah, by the Prophets of Allah.  Miracles are not magic, nor is a miracle an event brought about by a learned righteous people who are not Prophets of Allah. These events are called karamahs. Thus, we know three distinct terminologies: miracles, karamahs, and magic.

Islam is the religion of the truths and scientific miracles that the world’s best scientists have spent so much time discovering or even knowing that they exist. Plenty of scientific discoveries resemble Quran verses. However, the Quran is not a scientific book, but it is full of scientific challenging signals, that have been discovered in the last few decades. Miracles are part of Allah Qdrah (Ability). It’s considered to be an integral sign of Islam’s religion to prove the truthfulness of prophets. The nearness of Allah as a force and influence in the world is fundamental in Islam. Allah is the one who runs the whole universe.  And the whole universe is like an open book to prove the existence of Allah. Allah can reveal some of his ability through miracles to deter the non-believers.

I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.

Adh-Dhariyat : 56

The Holy Qur’an is an everlasting miracle sent by the Creator of the universe, Allah Almighty, about 14 centuries ago through His final Messenger, Prophet Mohammed (SAW), to humankind. It is considered to be the greatest miracle ever sent or witnessed on earth. The night of the holy Qur’an revelation is a miracle by itself. The entire metaphysical world was affected during the revelation. The night of the revelation is called (the Night of Qadr) which means power, destiny, and decree. As we have already covered this topic as it is better than thousand nights.

That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit1 descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter. It is all peace until the break of dawn.

Al-Qadr:4,5

The history of miracles

To make each prophet trustworthy is own time and place, Allah grants them specific miracles to be understandable for the people to whom they were sent. In the time of the prophet Mousa magic was the tradition of the people back then, so it appealed to the people and was concise.

Prophet Moses’ encounter with the magicians at Pharaoh’s court explains the difference between magic and miracles.

They asked, “O Moses! Will you cast, or shall we be the first to cast?” Moses said, “You first.” So when they did, they deceived the eyes of the people, stunned them, and made a great display of magic. Then We inspired Moses, “Throw down your staff,” and—behold!—it devoured the objects of their illusion! So the truth prevailed and their illusions failed. So Pharaoh and his people were defeated right there and put to shame. And the magicians fell down, prostrating.

Al-A‘raf:115-120

At the time of Jesus, the Israelites were super professional in the field of medicine. As a result, the miracles of Jesus were performed to challenge them.

And ˹on Judgment Day˺ Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour upon you and your mother: how I supported you with the holy spirit1 so you spoke to people in ˹your˺ infancy and adulthood. How I taught you writing, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel. How you moulded a bird from clay—by My Will—and breathed into it and it became a ˹real˺ bird—by My Will. How you healed the blind and the lepers—by My Will. How you brought the dead to life—by My Will. How I prevented the Children of Israel from harming you when you came to them with clear proofs and the disbelievers among them said, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

Al-Ma’idah: 110

In the time of the prophet Mohammed (SAW), the Arabs were the master of the spoken word even though they are not educated.

We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this ˹Quran˺ is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?

Fussilat :53

Examples of the scientific miracles in the Holy Qur’an.

1-Spherical Shape of the Earth in the Quran

The Holy Quran mentioned that the earth was spherical 1400 years ago. Back then, people used to believe that the earth is flat so that was the idea that formed the ancient maps of the universe.

and the earth and ˹the One˺ Who spread it!

Ash-Shams: 6

Al-Tawah is translated as ” spreading out” Science has described the shape of the earth as spreading out, and spreading or rounding has two movements. One is in a path, and the other is a movement of rotation around it; The earth revolves in a circular motion around the sun, resulting in the four seasons, which leads to the descent of water from the sky, the growth of plants from the earth, and another movement of the earth around itself resulting in night and day, and life on earth was based on that.

2-Mountains – Holding Down the Earth

And We have placed firm mountains upon the earth so it does not shake with them, and made in it broad pathways so they may find their way.

Al-Anbya: 31

and ˹made˺ the mountains as ˹its˺ pegs,

An-Naba: 7

Here are two verses that show that the earth is in a constant state of motion. We do not feel it and it is not collapsing because Allah placed gigantic mountains as a stake in the ground. Later on, the geologists discovered that mountains have roots deep under the surface of the ground. These roots work as pegs or stakes to prevent the earth from shaking.

3-Winds – for fertilizing

We send fertilizing winds, and bring down rain from the sky for you to drink. It is not you who hold its reserves.

Al-Hijr: 22

Modern science has recognized that one of the most important means of pollination of plants is winds.

4-Water- as part of everything

Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart?1 And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

Al-Anbya: 30

Scientists have discovered that everything in the universe consists mostly of water.

5-Iron

And We sent down iron with its great might, benefits for humanity, and means for Allah to prove who ˹is willing to˺ stand up for Him and His messengers without seeing Him. Surely Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty.

Al-Hadid: 25

According to M.E. Walrath, iron is not natural to the earth. Scientists state that billions of years ago, the earth was struck by meteorites. It was within these meteorites that iron was present and due to explosion on earth, we now have iron available to us

Conclusion

In short, there are plenty of miracles in the Holy Qur’an that bewildered the world. The miracles of the Qur’an are innumerable and countless. The entire Qur’an, from the first letter to the last letter, is miraculous.
