As we all know no month is precious or sacred as Ramadan month. Allah grant us this holy scared month each year in its perfect timing. If we just take time to consider, you would find yourself badly needs this month. To nourish our souls and mind, to revive again as a human – to recharge our batteries to go through this year, So how come witnessing this month and let it go without making the best of it to ourselves. If we can give Ramadan month a different name, it would be “ the feed of the soul. One of the most crucial things is that we need to prepare ourselves to make the best of this month for our own benefit.

Here’s some of the most important things that we have to do to win in this Holy month:

We should start from now, nothing is better than the present moment.

Why should we start now?

Because we are in Sha’ban, Sha’ban has been the neglected month because it is followed by Ramadan and people are busy to finish their stuff before Ramadan starts.

Nevertheless, Sha’ban is your gate to Ramadan. We can call it the month of preparation. Imagine that you have your final exam in the next month. So, would it be possible to start the same exact day!! Never. You need to study at least 2 or 3 weeks before the exam.

Apply this to the same case, the more prepared or knowledgeable you are, the more likely you will be able to do magic. Sha’ban has a lot of opportunities to maximize your good deeds and renew your intentions. Sha’ban is the month in which deeds are raised to Allah (SWT). As we all know Allah is aware of all our deeds and actions. However, we as human beings need to be reminded from time to time of that, in order to account ourselves for what we have done and concentrate on worshipping Allah.

The first step towards Ramadan is Sha’ban. the prophet peace be upon him used to fast a lot in Sha’ban to obtain the extra reward from Allah. so, all we have to do is the same. As in the Hadith:

On the authority of Usama Ibn Zaid who said, ” I said, ” O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as Sha’ban “. He said,” That is the month that people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which actions are raised to the lord of the words, and I love for my actions to be raised whilst I am fasting.”

As well as fasting you can set for yourself certain goals that you have to achieve during this month to train yourself:
  • Set Qur’an reading schedule whether for memorizing or just reciting.
  • Stick to a good new habit besides abandon a bad one.
  • Start saving money for charity or Zakat
  • Commit to a schedule for praying Tahajud.

The prophet (saw) said, ” O Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha’ban and enable us to reach Ramadan!”

Allah almighty has bestowed us with the holy month of Ramadan to purify our souls. Ramadan is not just about refraining from eating and drinking, you need to refrain yourself from every possible sin. Ramadan is the month in which the gates of Paradise are opened, good deeds are rewarded manifold, prayers are answered, spiritual statuses are elevated and people are forgiven. Seek hard to be one of those who are forgiven. As Muslims we have to exert more effort into preforming virtuous acts. We have to pay attention to prepare ourselves physically and spiritually.

Speaking of the spiritual side which is the most crucial and important, we need to do the following:
  • First things first are the intentions, we should start with intentions because it is the core of our actions. We have to channel them for the sake of Allah
  • Increase your Dua’, immerse yourself in good environment. Make Dua’ list for the tiny little detail.

We can recite the following Dua’:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَب، وَشَعْبَانَ، وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ

Allahumma barik Lana fi Rajab wa Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan

And the Dua’:

اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْنِي مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، وَسَلِّمْ رَمَضَانَ لِي، وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنِّي مُتَقَبَّلًا

Allahumma Sallimni li Ramadan. Wa sallim Ramadhana li. Wa tasallamhu minni mutaqabbala

  • Pursue new knowledge and information that make you move closer to Allah and understand your duties as a Muslim.
  • Remove everything that could distract you from the purpose of the blessed month. 
Regarding the physical side:
  • If you are caffeine addict, try to gradually decrease your morning caffeine dose. In order not to feel exhausted or tired.
  • Get your body prepared by voluntarily fasting, either on Mondays, Thursdays, Sha’ban month or on Ayyamul Bidh (the white days of fasting), being the 13th, 14th and 15th day of every month, or any three days of the month.

قال رسول الله ﷺ :  تُعْرَضُ الأَعْمَالُ يَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَالْخَمِيسِ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرَضَ عَمَلِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ

“Deeds are presented (before Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, so I love that my actions be presented while I am fasting”

The Prophet (saw) was also reported in another hadith:

وعنْ مُعاذةَ العَدَوِيَّةِ أَنَّها سَأَلَتْ عائشةَ رضيَ اللَّه عَنْهَا: أَكانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يصومُ مِن كُلِّ شَهرٍ ثلاثةَ أَيَّامٍ؟ قَالَت: نَعَمْ. فَقُلْتُ: منْ أَيِّ الشَّهْر كَانَ يَصُومُ؟ قَالَتْ: لَمْ يَكُن يُبَالي مِنْ أَيِّ الشَّهْرِ يَصُومُ.

I heard Muaz say; “I asked Aisyah (r.a); Did the Prophet (saw), fast three days each month?” She replied: “Yes,” I asked: “Which days did he fast?” She replied: “He did not care on which day he fasted”
  • Pay attention to what you eat, eat more healthier and stop junk food and eat healthy food so you can accomplish your duties and increase your energy.
  • Change your sleep patterns, to fit Ramadan schedule and your work. So, you can adjust your time when you go to be and when you get up before Ramadan starts.

In conclusion, Ramadan is our gift of blessings, try not to miss the chance to heal mentally, spiritually and even physically. In order to take full advantage of this holy month, we need to prepare ourselves well. Don’t miss the chance of Allah forgiveness and blessings. Pray not be one of the losers in this holy month.
