Praying is the actual connection between Allah and the worshipper, Is the communication with Allah, is where the Muslim builds a strong rapport with his creator (Allah). imagine talking to Allah Almighty (SWT), yeah, Allah made it easy for us through” praying”.  Praying is the second pillar of Islam. We get close to Allah by Praying, the prophet Mohamed taught us that we can approach Allah by performing prayer. Whether it is the obligatory or the voluntary ones. One of the most famous supererogatory prayers is the Duha prayer so, we will be focusing here on this article on the Duha prayer.

By the morning sunlight, and the night when it falls still! Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺.

surah Ad-Duha (1-3)

The definition of Duha prayer:

The linguistic meaning of Duha prayer is defined as the time of sunrise. The jurisprudential meaning of Duha is the voluntary Islamic prayer, that the prophet peace be upon him prayed frequently and urged his companions to pray. It is between the obligatory Islamic prayers of Fajr and Dhuhr. Duha prayer is a sunnah mu’akkadah (confirmed Sunnah)

Are the ishraq and Duha prayers the same?

According to the majority of scholars of Hadith and Fiqh, Duha Prayer and Al-Ishraq Prayer are all names of the same salah (ritual prayer). sometimes, it is called Ishraq especially if it is prayed after the sunrise.it may be called Awwābīn prayer too.

The time of Duha prayer

The time for the prayer begins when the sun has risen to the height of a spear, which is fifteen or twenty minutes after sunrise, until just before the sun slips its zenith (after the zenith is when the time for Zuhr prayer begins). It may be around 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. However, this is not accurate all the time because the position of the sun in each region is different and it influences Duha time. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin defined it as being from a quarter of an hour after the sun has risen until ten minutes before Zuhr prayer.

The best time for Duha prayer:

Duha prayer is performed after the sun has risen for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This time is extended until approximately 10-15 before the Zuhr prayer. the most preferred time for Duha prayer is when the sun reached its hottest part. Likewise, it is not preferred to pray Duha in time within 10-15 minutes before Ẓuhr prayer. The only permissible prayers are the ones you’ve missed by the virtue of forgetfulness or oversleeping.

Zaid bin Arqam (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I saw some people performing Duha (prayers) in the early forenoon and warned them (saying): These people must know that performing Salat a little later is better. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The Salat of the penitent is to be observed when the young ones of camels feel the heat of the sun (i.e., when it becomes very hot).”

For the unpreferred time for praying Duha, Uqba b. ‘Amir said:

There were three times at which Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) forbade us to pray, or bury our dead: When the sun begins to rise till it is fully up when the sun is at its height at midday till it passes over the meridian, and when the sun draws near to setting till it sets.

How is Duha prayer performed and the number of Raka’s:

The minimum number of rakʿahs for Duha prayer is 2 rakʿahs according to the prophet and scholarly consensus. Imām Muslim reports from the narration of Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah (r.a.) who said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to pray four Raka’ahs in Duha prayer and increase (the number of Raka’ahs) as much as Allah willed.”

How many rak’ahs in Duha prayer

The Maximum number of rakʿahs is not set to clear, but there are 3 opinions on that matter in brief:

The First opinion is 4 rakʿahs, most scholars consensus on 4 rakʿahs

The second opinion is 8 Rakʿahs, This is the opinion of Mālikis based on this Hadith: It was narrated from Umm Hāni’ bint Abu Tālib that on the day of the Opening (of Makkah), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Duha with eight rakʿahs, saying the salaam after each two rakʿahs

The third opinion is 12 Rakʿahs, This is the opinion of the Hanafis, based on this Hadith “Whoever prays Duha with twelve rakʿahs, Allah will build for him a palace of gold in Paradise.” When performing more than two raka’ahs in Duha prayers, one should make salām after every two Raka’s.

The virtue of performing Duha prayer:
  •  Equlivant to Alms to the whole human body. Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “When you get up in the morning, charity is due from every one of your joints. There is a charity in every ascription of glory to Allah; there is a charity in every declaration of His Greatness; there is a charity in every utterance of praise of Him; there is a charity in every declaration that He is the only true God (worthy of worship); there is a charity in enjoining good; there is a charity in forbidding evil. Two Rak’ah of Duha (Forenoon prayer) is equal to all this (in reward)”.

  • You are promised a house in Jannah. The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said :

“Whoever prays Duha with twelve rakʿahs, Allah will build for him a palace of gold in Paradise.”

  • Forgive all your sins:

“Anyone who does Duha prayer with a lasting will be forgiven his sins by Allah, even though the sins are as much as froth in the ocean.”

  • Prayer that witnessed by angels. Amr b. ‘Abasa said:

After the Prophet had gone to Medina I went there, and I visited him and said, “Tell me about the prayer.” He replied, “Observe the Morning Prayer, then stop praying when the sun is rising till it is fully up, for when it rises it comes up between the horns of the devil, and the infidels prostrate themselves to it at that time. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and angels are attendant at it.
